Leadership

Aerin Malana (She/They)

Chair

Hi! I'm Aerin, a 3rd year majoring in CS and minoring in Diversity, and I'm so excited to serve as chair of GEN1. As a first-generation Filipino-American student, I understand that our experience as first-gen students in the Allen School vastly differs from those that aren't first-gen, and how difficult it is to be the first in your family to be a part of an institution like UW. I can’t wait to be a part of building up and supporting our first gen community in so many ways. I can't wait to meet you all and if you have any questions or comments, feel free to reach out :)

Maggie Lai (She/Her)

Vice Chair

Hello, thanks for browsing! My name is Maggie, and I’m a 2nd year majoring in CS (minors TBD). As someone who didn’t decide to pursue computer science until I arrived at UW, I’m passionate about creating a space for all first gen students to bond over our unique experiences. We’re really looking forward to meeting you all, so feel free to send us an email, give us a follow, or talk to us if you see us around campus!

David Cueva (He/Him)

Secretary

Wazzaaap! I'm David, a third year majoring in CS and minoring in dance. As a first gen student coming from an immigrant family, I know all too well the institutional barriers and other challenges that come as a result. That's why we hope to create an environment where we can bring our own flair as first gen students and thrive together. I look forward to meeting you all so don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or want to talk about anything else! P.S. That includes music taste :P

Sonia Fereidooni (She/Her)

Student/Public Relations

Hello my name is Sonia and I enjoy long walks on the beach, cats, and inclusion with my diversity! Being a first-gen immigrant to the US with a non-CS background, I understand the struggle of breaking barriers and being the “first” in the family to push limits. Let me know about any questions or concerns about the club and how to get involved!

Eman Mustefa (She/Her)

Treasurer

Hi everyone! My name is Eman and I’m a freshman in the Allen School. My interests include watching a ton of Youtube, reading and boybands!! Coming into the Allen School this year was a big culture shock to me, as the first in my family to go to university and to pursue a CS degree, it was a complete and new environment for me. Learning how to navigate this new world around me is a difficult task, which I’m still working on doing. The biggest thing that helped me was my friends and knowing there were people like me, that's why I joined GEN1. Feel free to reach out about anything!

Zeynep Toprakbasti (She/Her)

Historian

I’m Zeynep, and I am a first year here at the Allen School! Allowing for a just and equal system for everyone to navigate the college process, the academic world, and the CS field is very important to me. As a first-generation American undergraduate student, making the right connections was difficult. Growing up in the United States school system with a family with English as their second language impacts the experience from preschool all the way up until college. I am proud to be part of this team whose mission is to make sure your background doesn’t impact your access to resources!
